SICOR S.p.a. – Online 3D Helmet Configurator

SICOR S.p.a. is the official supplier of work helmets to several entities on the Italian territory:

• Vigili del fuoco;
• Polizia di Stato;
• Carabinieri;
• Guardia di finanza.

Each institution works in different hazardous situations, so each helmet must meet different needs. Thus was born the desire to provide its customers with software that allows them to customize their protective helmets, having the following characteristics:

• change the materials of the product;
• change the colour of the product;
• choose accessories.

Airlapp has created a platform that is accessible to everyone through a browser, both from PC Windows and Macs and from mobile (Android and iPhone), without having to install a native app.

Airlapp developed an ad hoc solution to meet the needs of SICOR S.p.a. Together they collaborated in all phases of software production.

Firstly, the logic and functionality needed for the 3D configurator were analyzed.

Thanks to them, it was possible to define the constraints that the platform had to meet, such as the possible colours and materials of the protective helmet, the particular accessories of each helmet, and the movements the latter were capable of making (deduced through reference videos provided by SICOR S.p.a. itself).

Each configuration logic has been analyzed and designed for each helmet to ensure maximum transparency about the product during purchase.

This led to the definition of the following utilization flow:

• the users from the online catalogue choose to view one of the products in 3D;
• the configurator renders the chosen product in 3D in the browser;
• the users can customize the product by choosing materials, colours, and accessories;
• it will then be possible to download the PDF with the bill with all the data of the chosen configuration;
• it will also be possible to send SICOR S.P.A. a request for a quotation of the configuration made.

Starting from the above use cases, highly optimized code was developed for web development. Each configurator is created entirely according to the needs that different situations require, so the degree of personalization of the experience offered is maximum.

In this specific case, the following features were specially developed:

• a multilingual system with English or Italian language management;
• capture of one or more screenshots of the scene;
• emailing of the configuration made to the appropriate sales department (defined according to the users’ language) for a quotation;
• generation and download of PDF of the configuration list.

Hooking a 3D web configurator to your website or e-commerce requires no upheaval. The new 3D platform integrates perfectly with your existing logic and, more importantly, with the style and design you have already adopted.

Airlapp analyzed the entire SICOR S.p.a. website to define the user interface design and user experience logic already in place to propose a stylistic consistency in line with the company’s style.

Many companies now already have their products in digital 3D format. Whether in design or sales, having the ability to analyze and observe the object virtually from every angle provides a nontrivial advantage.

The configurators that Airlapp develops make it possible to use most of the already existing 3D models, intervening only to adapt the topology (the internal structure of the model) and complexity of the object for optimal online fruition in real-time. This allows a performant result without having to remodel all the products again, reducing costs and lead times.

If you do not have the original 3D models, no problem: you can model them from scratch already optimized for the Web, starting with the actual products.

The configurator uses cloud infrastructure for the storage of models, configurations, data, and processing analytics. This service makes the configurator always available and accessible from anywhere in the world.

Maintenance is performed on an ongoing basis to ensure service quality, security, and availability. In addition, being in the cloud allows new features to be implemented and new 3D models to be included without having to create and publish a new native app.

SICOR S.p.a. produces four main basic models of helmets, each widely configurable. Let’s see them in detail along with their 3D configurator:

VFR-EVO-N: nickel-plated variant of the VFR-EVO, protective helmet specifically for firefighters.

EOM: safety helmet specialized in forest firefighting, technical rescue, high-altitude rescue, and torrential water rescue.

EDL-01: personal protection system perfect for workers in the electrical, mining, or industrial sectors.

VFR-EVO: protective helmet specifically for firefighters.

SICOR S.p.a., through the use of the 3D configurator, won the SMAU 2019 Innovation Award for Sector: industry.
