Okkee is a brand that produces innovative and ultra-light motorcycle helmets. The helmets are made entirely of carbon, which allows them to weigh only 700 grams. Despite their lightweight, the helmets offer optimal protection, thanks to advanced technology derived from the aviation industry. Such helmets are also designed to be modular, thus fully customizable.

Through the close collaboration between Okkee and Airlapp, it was possible to put in place configuration rules that would allow the user maximum customization, while maintaining a configuration that is always valid.

Thanks to the online 3D product configurator, accessible from a simple internet browser (from both PC and smartphone), the user has the opportunity to customize the helmet that most reflects their personality, by going to configuring:

• shell;
• internal coating;
• chin guard;
• visor;
• helmet peak.

During Biker Fest Lignano and during Motor Bike Expo Verona, Okkee presented the 3D web configurator to improve the effectiveness of its festival presence and to attract more attention from the attending public. The advantages of having the configurator at the trade show or exhibition are numerous. First of all, it allows the customer to try the tool directly and see the final result in 3D in a realistic way.

This creates interest and curiosity, and also tangibly demonstrates the product’s appearance and features. Second, it provides the customer with an interactive and immersive experience, where they can see the end result of their customized helmet both in 3D and in reality.

Also included within the configurator is a pre-selection system called “Select Template“. This system provides the user with already configured helmets that can be modified by adding, removing, or changing elements. This system is useful for those who have unclear ideas or do not know how to start configuring their helmet.

Once the pre-configuration is uploaded, the user still has maximum freedom of use, as they can:

• customize the loaded configuration;
• start from scratch a new configuration;
• upload a different preconfiguration.

Okkee is aware of how crucial a helmet is to a rider from a design and safety perspective. For this reason, they collaborated with Airlapp to develop a 3D online configurator that accommodates every motorcycle rider’s style.

The project was divided into several phases to guarantee the best result, let’s see them.

First, the logic and functionality that the 3D configurator was to have were defined.

Each model is designed for maximum safety, comfort and modularity. It, therefore, follows that each model is designed to be made entirely of carbon, but with colours and accessories personalizable by the customer. These arrangements are the basis for the 3D configurator.

Starting from these requirements, a possible interaction flow for the customer has been defined:

• the users choose whether to start from scratch or from pre-configuration to create their product;
• the configurator renders the chosen product in 3D in the browser;
• the user can customize the helmet by choosing colours and accessories;
• it will also be possible to send Okkee a request for a quotation of the made configuration.

Airlapp conducted a careful analysis of the entire Okkee website to develop a Web configurator with a user interface that closely mirrors the style of the site.
Color palettes, fonts, and logos were retained by integrating them with the UI of the software.

Okkee provided Airlapp with templates for production. These models were optimised to be used from the web and retain all the aesthetic features entirely.
Materials, colours, and textures were then created so that the configurator would perfectly present the actual helmets, in all their nuances.

Airlapp’s configurator is tailored to meet the different needs of different situations, thus providing a highly personalized experience. Along with the logic tailored to the product, all the features required by the customer have been incorporated, such as:

• choice of materials;
• colour configuration;
• addition and removal of accessories;
• input animation;
• automatic rotation, after a few moments the product rotates automatically, allowing it to be displayed 360°;
• full-screen display of one’s helmet;
• exploring technical information regarding the specific helmet;
• capture a high-quality screenshot of one’s configuration;
• sharing one’s configuration;
• send a quote with all configuration data; thanks to the CPQ feature, the user sees the price in real-time and a quote is sent.

The configurator relies on a cloud infrastructure for storing models, configurations, data, and analyzing statistics. This service is a significant benefit, as it ensures that the configurator is always operational, reachable from anywhere in the world, secure, and scalable.

Okee produces three helmet models: Vinci, Volaterra and Romito. Starting from the same base, the customers can configure their helmets according to their needs and tastes.
